Son or daughter love kicking the soccer ball around in the yard?  Here are a few things you should know before you embark on the search for soccer leagues or camps.

    • Most soccer leagues offer teams for kids age 4 or older.  There are specialized preschool soccer programs in certain areas of the country that focus their efforts on children age 3-5.
    • If you are starting your child in soccer as a preschooler, we recommend looking for an option focused on basic skill development rather than full-time team oriented play.
    • Soccer Leagues typically offer Spring seasons with registration beginning as early as January.  A few also offer Summer or Fall leagues.  Look for registration in April-May for Summer Leagues and June-July for Fall leagues.
    • Many leagues are volunteer organizations and do not have complete registration and season information readily accessible on their web site.  Signing up for the league's newsletter helps ensure you will be notified of registration information and season dates.
    • Most Soccer Leagues have practices or games two times per week.  Traveling or Select teams require an additional time commitment on the weekends.
    • If you are looking to get your kids involved in soccer, but missed Spring sign-ups, consider a soccer camp.  Camps are a great way to build a child’s skills and confidence.
    • If you are looking for an off-season option, or a program that requires less time commitment, consider your local YMCA.  Many YMCA’s offer indoor and outdoor soccer options for children age 3-12. You do not need to be a member of the YMCA to participate.
    • In addition to registration fees, consider expenses for soccer shoes and shin pans.  You may also chooose to purchase a soccer ball for practice at home.
