Summer Rock Camp for Kids

Last night, my girls were watching Camp Rock 2 and I got sucked in. Even though it was laden with puppy love and musical numbers, it made me long for the days when I went to summer camp. My girls, who are 9 and 8, are too young for overnight camp, but the time is nearing. And now thanks to Disney, the pressure is on to find a real-world Camp Rock because they have their little musical hearts set on going. I did a little bit of searching and found some great options.

Camp Jam Overnight has overnight rock camps in a variety of major U.S. cities. Overnight camp is available for ages 11-17. Day camps are open to ages 7-10. Kids are immersed in all things rock and visiting professional musicians make appearances.

School of Groove hosts Rock Island Overnight Camp in Portsmouth, New Hampshire for musicians ages 8 – 18. Maximum number of participants at camp is 18 so campers get very personal instruction.

The Collective Sound is a three or six-week overnight summer music camp for young musicians, ages 12-18. In 2013, they offer only one U.S. location in Orange County.

Camp Encore/Coda offers an overnight summer camp in Maine that’s open to musicians ages 8 and older.  Although the camp is not dedicated to rock ensemble programs, they do offer instructional programs in that musical genre, as well as several others.

If your kids are not ready for an overnight camp experience, I found two rock programs that offer day camps in various cities across the country.

Rock Camp USA has been around for 16 years and offers 2-week long day camps in a handful of major U.S. cities for kids ages 8 and older.

School of Rock, a franchise-based rock school with hundreds of U.S. locations, offers a variety of rock day camps that compliment their year-round programs for kids 7 and older.

Who knows, one of my sweet little girls could be the next Demi Lovato!
