Balancing Fall Activities with Back to School

Whether your child can't wait for the first day of school, or is dreading school's return, heading back to school is a huge adjustment.  Taking school's impact into consideration when planning fall activities can make the season more enjoyable for the whole family.

    Plan  Ahead

School days typically bring changes in morning wake up and bedtime.  Little bodies can take a few days to a week to adjust to these changes.  If you have the flexibility, consider starting your new wake up and bedtime schedule a week or two before school starts.  This will ensure your child is adjusted to the new schedule and also well rested as he faces the mental, physical and social demands of the school day.

    Choose Carefully

Your child's school days are filled with activity and she is likely to come home exhausted the first couple of weeks.  Consider fall activities that do not start until mid-September or later.  Or, look for activities that have most or all of the sessions on the weekend for the fall season.   If this is not an option, select activities that only meet once or twice during the week and do not interfere with your child's normal sleeping schedule.

    Don't Overbook

Fall is a time when kids can still be active outside.  Electing to only enroll you child in only one activity can help ensure he has the energy he needs for school and the time to finish homework assignments without feeling added time pressure.  If your children need to expend additional pent up energy, send them outside to play.  You can pick up an additional activity in the Winter if your child has the time, energy and interest.
