Fall is a great time for family fun at home or away. Here are some suggestions for places to visit with the kids.
Apple Orchards & Pumpkin Patches
Honeycrisps, Haralsons, Red Gold, oh my! Head to your local apple orchard and pick up your favorite apple variety, cider, apple brats, donuts and pie. Opt for one that offers family activities in addition to delicious eats. Bonus: Most orchards also have pick-your-own pumpkin patches.
And it is also common for them to have hay rides, playgrounds, horseback rides, petting zoos, and other activities your kids will enjoy.Corn Mazes
Make like the Children of the Corn and venture through a local corn maze. The popularity of mazes has grown incredibly and some of the designs are quite impressive. A note of caution, most mazes are quite complex and should be reserved for older children or a young child who is accompanied by an adult.Nature Centers
Enjoy a leisurely stroll on a nature path under the crimson leaves. Go in the early evening and watch for deer. Bring a notebook and start a nature journal to document all of the animals and interesting plants you see along your trek. Check the special events schedule and see if they’re hosting anything for Halloween. For example, my neighborhood center is hosting a low-scare hayride and bonfire suitable for tinier tots.Historic Farms
Many historic places, particularly farms, host hands-on educational events for kids. For example, in the fall kids can learn how farmers had to prepare for the impending cold months in the days of wood burning stoves and horse-drawn carriages.Haunted Houses
It’s common for local fire, police or sheriff’s departments to host haunted houses at their stations. The events may double as a fund-raising event for a local charity or the department itself. Get a good scare for a good cause.
