  • Description - Camp Candlelight

Camp Candlelight is one of the most cherished programs offered by the Epilepsy Foundation of Arizona and one we believe can be a life-changing experience for a child with epilepsy. Camp Candlelight provides children ages eight to fifteen with a unique camping experience that combines traditional camp activities with specialized sessions that teach the campers about their seizures and gives them valuable tips in dealing with the challenges seizures may present. The children also enjoy meeting other children who share similar experiences. Camp Candlelight is one-week of summer activities such as: arts and crafts, archery, horseback riding, kayaking, canoeing, fishing, campfires, paintball and hiking. Low ropes and high ropes courses, a climbing tower and zipline challenge camper's athleticism and problem solving skills. Recognizing the importance of swim instruction and water safety especially for children in Arizona, Tony Lehn, Camp Director, is a certified swim instructor and will teach the campers how to swim if they do not have that skill. This program allows campers the opportunity to participate in outdoor activities while developing a sense of self-worth, independence and personal responsibility. Camp Candlelight is designed to be an educational experience, as well as fun. Campers are taught about seizures, medication and socialization from supplemental camp counselors and staff, many of whom have epilepsy or a background in health care. These children and teens are provided a forum in which to discuss seizure myths and concerns facing them as adolescents.
