SCHOOL PHILOSOPHY "To sing and dance well is to be well educated." -Plato The Dance Teacher believes that children can gain great benefits as well as great pleasure from good dance training, whether or not a career is the goal. Dance involves and challenges the mind as well as the entire body. An exhilarating sense of achievement can be felt as control of the body is attained. Dance training develops mental alertness, and a strong, flexible, well-coordinated body. It can encourage self confidence and musical awareness. Our classes work towards these beliefs. Why do kids need a ballet background if they want to go on to other styles of dance? The most important reason is that ballet gives the basics needed for all styles of dance. The counting of music, alignment and basic terminology of ballet tends to sneak into jazz and modern and is essential for a student's success. In as much as tap merely requires quick loose ankles, the ballet fundamentals permits a tap dancer to have better posture, stronger phrasing of rhythms, and less prone to injury from proper placement and alignment. Technique for turning becomes vital as one advances tap levels too. Always remember that everyone can move; everyone can dance. The key is to learn to move to an instructor's counts and follow the instructor's steps. Students without a ballet background often become quickly frustrated in a traditional dance class. Not knowing how to breathe like a dancer, jump like and dancer, and hold one's body like a dancer results in overtiring very quickly. Another obstacle becomes the lack of discipline. Ballet training in the beginning can be VERY boring to bright, active children ヨ especially in today's society. Children and parents intellectually understand the concepts of barre technique, but prefer to participate/observe the fast pace of doing something once and going on. Very seldom does our current society have a child repeat skills over and over until they become second nature ヨ or muscle memory takes over. Ballet is an art discipline that does require repetition, which the novice parent to the art often does not understand. Anything not mastered immediately to smart children can become frustrating and then is labeled "BORING". This is when kids need encouragement to follow through and stick with the learning process. It is our hope by introducing other fundamental styles of modern and jazz into class that students will gain a greater understanding and appreciation, which in turn translates into a dedication to the art form. Always remember that the confidence developed once skills are mastered and the student is comfortable presenting these steps/skills can carry over into other aspects of a child' life.
