  • Description - Etgen-Atkinson Ballet School

Pre-School: This division for children age three to six is planned from the standpoint of the psychological as well as the physical development of the child. These classes will provide children with ballet fundamentals and give them an opportunity to work harmoniously with other children while engaging in creative dances. These are one hour classes twice a week. Beginning & Intermediate: Students are carefully led through beginning and intermediate grades into pointe. Pointe work should not be undertaken until the legs and feet are sufficiently strong and developed. Any student on pointe is required to have at least two classes per week. The School does not encourage hurried training and practices the policy of all serious schools in properly preparing each student with a basic ballet foundation before beginning pointe work. Correct training begun at the right age is of paramount importance in the education of ballet dancers. It insures faultless technique and distinction of style throughout their careers, whereas errors permitted at the beginning of ballet training become increasingly serious impediments as the work advances. The boys, of course, do not go on pointe. Their training is based more on jumps, beats, turns and exercises that develop strength and agility. Classes in these divisions are for one hour periods twice a week. Advanced & Professional: The classes in this division will last for one and a half hours and will include academic ballet, toe, supported adagio and variations from the current and traditional repertoire. Regular and lengthy practice, both supervised and independent, is required to master the various positions and movements. The students' body must be trained by rigid discipline until the technique is so fully mastered that it does not have to be thought about. Then the dancer is free to use the body as an instrument and is ready to cope with the different styles and interpretations of the choreographer. Dancers in this division are eligible to audition for the Dallas Metropolitan Ballet. Through this training our graduates are able to take their place in any professional ballet company in this or any country.
