  • Description - Hartley Nature Center

We are dedicated to environmental education for all people, focusing on school-aged youth from the surrounding region. Hartley Nature Center resides in a beautiful 7500 square foot state of the art 'Green' building on Woodland Avenue on the north side of Hartley Park. Fun Things to Do In the Park: Take a Hike - Hartley has more than 10 miles of hiking trails, ranging from easy walking paths to fairly rigorous backpacking style trail. While there is no camping allowed in the park, many folks like to pack lunch and head out for the day. Ask us about some of the staff's favorite hikes. Go Fishing - A river does run through it, and we've got a pretty cool pond too. Hartley Pond has native populations of pumpkinseed sunfish, largemouth bass, suckers, perch, and bullheads. The Department of Natural Resources also stocks the pond and Tischer Creek with hundreds of brook and brown trout fingerlings each spring. So cast a line and see what you pull in. Ride Your Bike - Many of our hiking trails west and north of Old Hartley Road are open for mountain biking too, but most challenge-seeking bikers head to the northwest corner of the park for some serious singletrack. Area bike clubs help us keep the trails and boardwalks in good condition. Please stop in for a park map, as bikes are prohibited from using the ski trails. Also please refrain from using the trails in very wet conditions. Ski The Trails - The city grooms and maintains 5 kilometers of classic-only trails in Hartley Park. They vary from easy glides to screaming hills, so check the trail map before you head out. We also rent cross country ski equipment for first timers or those who don't have their own with them. You must have a Great Minnesota Ski Pass to ski the Hartley trails, or any other city maintained trails. Passes are not available for purchase at Hartley Nature Center. Check Out Our Exhibits - The main exhibit hall in the Hartley building always has something new and cool to see. From our celebrity turtles to park history to Green building facts to traveling exhibits, you should have no trouble finding something to interest almost anyone. We also have park maps and other information and bathrooms and a friendly staff to answer your questions. Snowshoe Like An Explorer - Winter is awesome in the park, and there is no better way to find that out than by piloting a pair of snowshoes. Go places no human can get to any other time of year. We can suggest a great hike, and have snowshoes for you to rent if you don't have your own. Canoe on Hartley Pond - You can rent canoes at Hartley Pond every Saturday during the summer. Get a close up look of the beaver lodge and beaver dam at the back end of Hartley Pond or just paddle around with friends and family. Find A Bird - Hartley Park is one of the hotspots on the Duluth Audubon Society's official birding map, and a favorite among those in the birding know. We have deep forests, open fields, and high vistas to view birds of every stripe. Bring your binoculars and a field guide and have a great day. Also watch the event calendar for our special public birding programs where you will get a chance to see live bird banding up close. Day Camps at Hartley: All of Hartley's day camps feature a mix of traditional camp activities with a focus on exploring our natural surroundings, no matter what the weather! The 660-acre Hartley Park serves as our primary launch pad for adventures aplenty, with additional off-site opportunities for older youth.
