  • Description - The Hole in the Wall Gang Camp

Founded in 1988 by Paul Newman, The Hole in the Wall Gang Camp in Ashford, Connecticut is a nonprofit, residential summer camp and year-round center serving children and their families coping with cancer and other serious illnesses and conditions. Through Camp programs, year-round outreach to hospitals and clinics, and ongoing services for children, families and caregivers, the Camp serves more than 15,000 annually. All of the Camp's services are provided free of charge. Here, children diagnosed with cancer, sickle cell anemia, HIV/AIDS, hemophilia and other serious and life-threatening conditions enjoy more than they or their parents ever thought possible. Activities include archery, mini golf, swimming, boating, fishing, horseback riding, arts and crafts, sports, theater and camping; all are designed to include every child and ensure that no child will fail. A zero-entry pool provides water fun for all campers, regardless of any mobility challenges they may have. A special warming room or 'French fryer' allows children with sickle cell anemia to enjoy swimming - many for the first time in their young lives. An exceptional tree house, mini golf course and multiple trails are specially designed to be wheelchair-accessible, ensuring an inclusive experience for all youngsters. The Hole in the Wall Gang Camp serves approximately 15,000 children each year. Through our signature summer program, we host more than 1,000 children at nine sessions. Sessions 1 through 8 are devoted to seriously ill children; Session 9 to the siblings of children with life-threatening illnesses or conditions. The following criteria have been established for attendance at sessions 1 - 8: Children aged 7 to 15; with a diagnosis of malignancy, genetic blood disorder, or HIV (although, under special circumstances, we may interpret these medical conditions broadly); who reside in New England, New York and New Jersey (although children or groups from other geographic areas are included when possible); and/or children who are medically unable to attend any other camp. Special priority factors may include the child's inability to attend an ordinary camp because of disease, complications or therapy. We also make selections to assure appropriate balances of age, gender, and diagnoses, and take into account previous attendance at Camp.
